I'll huff and I'll puff......
And we only wish that we had a big bad wolf that could blow our bricks down. This is hard work.
We are trying to salvage the brick to re-use as our flooring. I think it will be beautiful - a labor of love!(just don't ask Jay or Herbie if they are loving the labor, It may just be me since I am laboring here at the computer and not out there with them). Tomorrow we will take a break and make a road trip to Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta. Come in Saturday and see our new finds! Jay may even let you have a peek into our Antique bank vault if he can clear a path. It is really cool.

here we go...
Here we go.....
AGAIN!
Yesterday I said that we were going to start a Revolution. Bet you never guessed that we would have the perfect backdrop for it!
First on our enemy list was PROCRASTINATION. We have been working on working on this old bank building for 4 years. Now is the time, Jay promises. The beauty of this shopkeeping gig is the flexibility it offers and the opportunity to do something new and different on any given day. We have closed our store during the week and will only open on Saturday until we get this trash heap cleaned out! I will let you know if we find any treasures.

A wise little girl made her New Year Revolutions on Facebook the other day. What a novel idea, I thought. I kinda like the idea of starting a revolution rather than those pesky ole resolutions that we never stick with. Today, Alice and Jay begin the Revolution of 2011. The first step of Revolution - self directed warfare. Identify the enemy and then get to know them. Jay and I are our own worst enemy... and so the list begins. This is the week to look inside our own doors and begin to sort through the trash. Changes are ahead, for what is the point of a revolution if it is not allowed to pick you out of your comfort zone and move you to a newer and better place.
Start your own revolution this week, who knows what may happen.

Happy

Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.
It is the first day of a new year, a clean slate, one of my favorite days of the year. As a perpetual organizer who never actually gets anything completely organized, this day offers such hope. Hope for all of the projects that have been sitting on the shelf whispering my name. Hope for all of the adventures that are to fill the coming months. Hope for better things to come. Hope - the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best. Hope - one of the most beautiful gifts that we have been given.
Jay and I are beginning this year with hope and we are wishing that each and every one of you will be covered with a blanket of hope that inspires you to reach your loftiest dreams. Dig deep in your soul and find the thing that you have always wanted to do...then don't just dream it, DO IT! Put your heart in it and enjoy the ride. If someone from the other side of the railroad tracks tries to rain on your parade, just go buy a fabulous umbrella and dance in the rain.
Today, we wish you a bowl full of black-eyed peas, turnip greens, and hog jowl to start the year off in the proper Southern way! May your table be full of laughter and your homes be so full of love that it spreads across the neighborhood. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! A new year, a new beginning. Jay and I have been contemplating our new plan for the year. We usually begin the year with a thorough cleaning, painting, and mini remodel. While our plan is still to begin the painting next week, we are torn with our direction to go with the store. Do we continue as we have? ... Do we try a new twist?.... Or do we simply put the "closed" sign on the front windows and start fishing for a living? We are truly thankful for our wonderful customers and in a bad economy, life has been good...but....it has also been very hard. It is extremely difficult to find those fabulous treasures, clean them, paint them, repair them and then sell them for a reasonable amount. I am certain that we are not alone but we are tired. Is anyone else out there tired? So..like I always tell Jay when we get tired,"let's get on our big girl panties and get going". Next week we will put our thinking caps on and think...think...think....pray...pray....and pray! If you have any ideas...we would love to hear them.
But for today, Happy, happy new year to all. xoxo Alice and Jay

bringing down the house

We're back! After a full week of deconstructing a mid 1800's tenant house, we are back in Sasser to try and reconstruct some nifty new things for the store. This is the house before we started.
The front porch roof was the first thing to fall. Jay had to give me a lesson in bringing down a house. We have only taken bits and pieces of a house before, this was my first total demolition. As usual, I started out excited. Then I began to really look at the house. I began to imagine a family(probably a lot like the Ingalls family). I dreamed of how excited the family must have been to be building their own home.
The porch fell and so did my excitement. As I carefully studied the construction of hand hewn logs, giant wooden pegs, and beautiful hand forged nails I imagined strong rough hands of a young man building a home for his bride. The pride that was taken in each beam and board still seemed to sing a faint song that I was certain you could hear if you put your heart close enough! My heart ached a little for this sweet little home.
The walls came down after the tin roof. Can walls really talk? Sure they can. These walls wrapped their warm arms around families for over 150 years. In fact,
there were still a few families living in these walls! This little cotton mouse had quite a comfy home complete with a stash of fresh nuts.
Every single board, peg, and post was heart pine. Arachnophobia? Stay clear of old heart pine houses in the woods. This house had thousands of spiders.
After three full days of hammering and crow barring...the little house is looking bare. But guess what? It is still standing! It is a skeleton of what it was, but Jay and Herbie could NOT bring it down. I am pretty sure that there is one little post that is holding it up, but it is HOLDING it up. I hope that the handsome young man is smiling above as he watches his little handmade home stand up to the test of time. Hopefully we can share a bit of his love in some heart pine tables we are making for the store. Come by and see if you can hear the music....
